Introduction
1. You will be given a fairly lengthy extract to summarize
2. The summary you need to write must not exceed 130 words
3. The summary may be a general summary of the extract or may require a certain aspect of the extract,
for example the reasons for or the results of an incident or event
Guidelines
- Read the passage through several times until you can get the main message of the write
- Make rough notes of the passage. You could first underline the main points and supporting details.
- Arrange the notes in the right order and join them up so that they read smoothly
- Use connectors to maintain flow and continuity
- Do not include examples and irrelevant remarks
- Do not include your own ideas in a summary
- Check for length. If it is too long, you have included unnecessary details and if it is too short, you have probably left out some salient points
- Do not leave out auxiliary verbs like " was " or articles like " a" or " an" to shorten your summary
- Do not copy out chunks of the original passage. Use your own words as far as possible
- Check for accuracy of ideas and language
- State the number of words at the end of the summary
When writing an essay expressing viewpoints, each step must be logically linked to the previous one. Here is a list of the more commonly used logical and sequence connectors. There are usually used at the beginning of a sentence.
On the continuation I will prepare several connectors for you to used in your writing. Until then..
